He begins to write notes on Fetch in his journal, finding them important for his project.Ī couple weeks before Christmas, Dare and Greg set up an indoor picnic. The next day, Greg receives dozens of texts and he realizes that they have to be from Fetch. He thinks it’s Hadi, but is proven wrong when Hadi, Cyril, and Manuel, a student who transferred over from Madrid, approach him to head to Spanish class. As Greg’s leaving he gets a text from an unknown number that claims to be Fetch. He tunes out to focus on his crush, Kimberly. Two days later, in Advanced Scientific Theory, Greg is excited to learn that they will be lectured on the Zero Point Field. They also bring up the neighbor’s dog, which attacked Greg once. Greg tells Dare that the McNallys hired him to babysit their son Jake, and they bring up Dare’s “Magic Finger of Luck,'' a joke that oddly seems to have some truth to it. Dare came to set up a new generator under his parents’ tall, modern, oceanfront house. Greg returns home and is greeted by his uncle Darrin, who called and texted him multiple times while in the restaurant, which he didn’t hear. They suddenly hear a door slam inside the building and run away. Greg tries to activate the animatronic, noticing that the storm stops and the only water stain in the ceiling is above his head, but the storm starts again when Fetch moves. At a murky glass counter, they find a robotic dog named Fetch, which is designed to sync up with phones and retrieve information and other things. Greg begins to feel drawn to an old, abandoned pizzeria in the seaside town of Washington he lives in, so one crisp autumn night, after a storm knocks the power out, he convinces his friends Hadi and Cyril to break in with him. He also has his own plants to experiment with and has been researching the Zero Point Field and random event generators. Greg is a 14-year-old boy who is engrossed with theories on the impact that thought and intention have on random, real-world events thanks to experiments conducted by Cleve Backster.
